Future Of C.L. Park Is Up To You

Dr. Bob Moyers

Why save Conneaut Lake Park? Is it worth the effort? Would it be better to let it fail, sell the property and replace hundred-year-old historic buildings, grounds, boardwalk and beach with condominiums?

Some feel that it's inevitable and it is time to move on and let the Park be bulldozed into history. Later, when missed, there will be pictures in the Historical Society's archives to help with fading memories and with remembering stories of past good times with our children and grandchildren.

What will we answer when they ask us why Conneaut Lake Park isn't still here for them to visit and enjoy? We might explain that in spite of the Park belonging to the people of northwestern Pennsylvania, it didn't quite make it. Long-standing debt, legal and management problems from a previous owner were major challenges for the new board and the newly hired professional CEO to correct in one shortened season.

But if hundreds, and more likely thousands, of our neighbors realize their wish, the Park will not only survive but flourish. To help the Park, volunteers have worked countless hours as individuals and as members of the Historical Society, Conneaut Lake Area Business Association, the Conneaut Lake Institute, Meadville Rotary, and other groups.

Also, contributions from the Pittsburgh and Cleveland areas, and as far away as Ireland, have been received. These people are determined to save and grow the Park for our children and families to enjoy. Your help is needed now if we are to save the Park. Will you join our dedicated neighbors and save this important part of our heritage?

The court has indicated that by the end of December the Trustees must have an approved plan for opening next spring. That is why we can't wait; the funds are needed now. Money is being raised by the Conneaut Lake Institute to help the Park open this spring. The non-profit Institute is committed to saving the Park; all funds will be used for that purpose.

A new and dedicated Park Board with qualified professional management is now in place. A sound business plan is being developed, and we are optimistic that the Park can not only survive but flourish with everyone's help. We need your help if we are to keep our community's irreplaceable historic, recreational and economic resource.

Our families and children will thank us for the gift of keeping Conneaut Lake Park in their future. Will you give them this holiday gift?
